German Court rejects Samsung patent lawsuit against Apple over 3G/UMTS Technology
Samsung Electronics suffered a loss today as Germany’s Mannheim regional court ruled against them and rejected their claims that Apple were infringing on one of their patents. The case, which is said to be concerning a patent “essential” to the 3G/UMTS wireless telecommunications standards, is one of several lawsuits Samsung have filed against Apple in Germany which altogether concern seven other patents, two of which will be soon be decided on.
While an official reason hasn’t been publicly released as to why the claim was rejected some are suggesting that either Apple was found not to be infringing on Samsung patents, or that Samsung’s IP rights have been exhausted (if this was the case it would mean two of Samsung’s other 3G claims would most likely be rejected ).
In response to the decision a Samsung Spokesperson has said “We are disappointed that the court did not share our views regarding the infringement by Apple of this specific patent in Germany,” but even though Samsung have those views they have yet to form an appeal to the case…
